Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Thursday pointed to illegal migration and religious conversions as major factors behind demographic shifts in the country, stressing that while the government is acting against infiltration, society too has a responsibility to safeguard balance.

Speaking at the centenary celebrations of the RSS, Bhagwat underlined that religion must remain a matter of individual choice and should not be influenced by inducements or coercion. “Conversion and illegal migration are key reasons for demographic imbalance. We should not be offering jobs to illegal immigrants; those opportunities should go to our own people, including Muslims,” he said.

Responding to questions on infiltration, Bhagwat noted that official efforts alone cannot resolve the issue. “The government is taking steps, but society must also do its part. Religion is personal; there should be no allurement or force in this,” he reiterated.

Addressing the broader relationship between the Sangh and politics, Bhagwat dismissed suggestions of friction with the BJP or the government. He said while differences of opinion may arise in pursuing national goals, there was never a deeper divide. “There can be matbhed (differences of opinion), but no manbhed (differences of heart). We discuss, reach consensus, and follow collective decisions. That spirit ensures unity,” he explained.

Highlighting the Sangh’s approach to governance, Bhagwat added that the organisation has always maintained coordination with governments, past and present, despite systemic constraints inherited from colonial rule. “Even if the person in office is supportive, he must work within the system’s limitations. We must give him independence. There is no quarrel anywhere,” he said.

He also emphasised the Sangh’s ethos of discipline and cooperation. “Our swayamsevaks work with honesty. They do not believe in narrow ‘isms’ or personal rivalries. There may be struggles in the pursuit of truth, but not quarrels, because the common aim is to serve the country and its people. That shared purpose ensures coordination,” Bhagwat said.
