In a disturbing case that echoes the plot of a Bollywood thriller, police in Maharashtra’s Palghar district are investigating the murder of a 35-year-old man whose body was allegedly buried beneath the floor of his own home by his wife and her lover.
The deceased, Vijay Chavan, had reportedly been missing for over two weeks before his brothers uncovered the gruesome truth on Monday morning at his residence in Gadgapada, Nalasopara East, about 70 km from Mumbai.
According to NDTV, when the brothers arrived at the house, they noticed that a selection of the floor tiles appeared freshly laid and different in colour. Their suspicions deepened when a foul smell began to emanate as they removed the tiles, revealing a buried vest and ultimately leading to the discovery of Chavan’s body.
Police now suspect that Chavan was murdered by his 28-year-old wife Komal Chavan, who is missing along with a neighbour, identified as Monu. Officials have been reported to believe the two were romantically involved and allegedly plotted the killing together. Instead of disposing of the body elsewhere, they are said to have concealed it inside the house, laying new tiles over the burial site in an attempt to hide the crime.
Neighbours reportedly told police that Komal had claimed her bathroom drainage was clogged and had called workers to dig up the area.
She has an 8-year-old son with her deceased husband.
This case joins a string of recent murders involving extramarital affairs that have captured public attention. Earlier this year in Meghalaya, a woman named Sonam Raghuvanshi allegedly killed her husband Raja during their honeymoon. Investigations revealed that Sonam had not married Raja by choice and was reportedly in love with another man.
Similarly, in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, Merchant Navy officer Saurabh Rajput was found murdered and dismembered, with his remains sealed in a cement drum. Police later arrested his wife, Muskan Rastogi, and her alleged partner Sahil Shukla.
In the Palghar case, authorities are continuing their search for Komal and Monu, both of whom have been untraceable for the past two days. They remain the prime suspects in the case.
