Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday hit back at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who allegedly told party colleagues that the Assam chief minister would be sent to jail. Responding with sarcasm, Sarma reminded Rahul that he himself is out on bail in multiple criminal cases and wished him a pleasant stay in Assam.
"Take it in writing, Himanta Biswa Sarma will definitely be sent to jail’- these were the exact words spoken by the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, during his closed-door meeting with the Congress Political Affairs Committee in Assam. He came all the way to Assam just to say this, conveniently forgetting that he himself is out on bail in multiple criminal cases registered across the country," Sarma said on X.
He extended his "best wishes" to Rahul Gandhi, saying that he should enjoy the hospitality of Assam for the rest of the day.
Separately, Sarma dismissed Rahul Gandhi's day-long visit to Assam, adding that he does not wish to waste his time on the Congress leader.
"Now that he has lost the election, why should I spend my time on him? He is not that important anymore. He lost, and after that, he kept losing a series of elections. So why should I waste my time on him?" Sarma was quoted as saying by NDTV.
Earlier, Sarma had warned Rahul that he will be arrested following the Lok Sabha elections for allegedly instigating violence in the state during his Bharat Jodo Yatra.
Rahul, accompanied by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, arrived in Guwahati on Wednesday morning on a day-long visit.
This is the first visit of the party's top leaders since Gaurav Gogoi took over as the state president, ahead of next year's assembly election.
Kharge and Gandhi were received at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport by the party's state leadership, who greeted them with traditional Assamese scarf 'gamosas'.
