The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday said India is facilitating the safe return of many Indian students and the safety of Indians in Iran remains a top priority for the government.
Addressing the media, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said there are 9,000 nationals of Indian origin in Iran. They consist of students, businesspersons, seafarers. Commenting on shifting Indian students to safer locations, Jaiswal said New Delhi has shifted several students to safer locations from Tehran.
He also added that the embassy is helping several Indians to cross over to Armenia and Azerbaijan by ensuring a seamless visa process. India will arrange for commercial flights for these people at the earliest, assured the MEA spokesperson.
Outlining government's efforts to ensure safety of Indian nationals amid the war , Jaiswal added: “We have around 9,000 Indian nationals in Iran, including students, seafarers, businesspeople, professionals and pilgrims. Following advisories issued earlier, many, especially students have already returned home. We have shifted several Indians from Tehran to safer locations and are assisting those who wish to leave via Azerbaijan and Armenia with visas and land border crossings so they can take commercial flights back. Our mission in Tehran remains in constant touch with the community and is providing all possible assistance.”
The ministry noted that PM Modi has spoken to several Gulf leaders, emphasising the need for dialogue and diplomacy. He underlined the importance of civilian safety and assured that the welfare of the Indian diaspora remains a top priority. Officials also acknowledged that the conflict has impacted the lives of Indian citizens in the region.
