The Centre, on August 22, clarified that TikTok and Ali Express continue to remain banned in India, amid reports that some users were recently able to access the websites of the China-based platforms.
A senior official told Moneycontrol that the Centre has not unblocked the app, which was originally taken down under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act in 2020.
TikTok, Ali Express, along with several other Chinese apps, had been banned in India in June 2020, citing concerns over data security and privacy.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) had at the time said the apps were “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of the state and public order.”
The move came against the backdrop of heightened tensions between India and China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
As of August 22, Moneycontrol was able to access the site on Vodafone and Airtel Broadband networks, but was not functional on Airtel Mobile and Jio networks. It remained unavailable on Google Play Store and Apple's App Store at the time of publication.
