A man from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has been reportedly receiving a flood of calls after his mobile number was flashed during Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s press conference on alleged voter list manipulation on Thursday.
The man, identified as Anjani Mishra, works in sales, says he has been using the number for more than 15 years. He said he was shocked to see it displayed at Gandhi’s briefing in Delhi and intends to file a police complaint, as per a report by India Today.
“I have not filed any application for voter deletion. Since the number was shown, I have been receiving nonstop calls. I am upset and will complain to the police,” Mishra said.
At the press conference held at the Congress headquarters, Gandhi sharpened his attack on the Election Commission, alleging it was “protecting” those “destroying Indian democracy” by enabling systematic voter deletions in Congress strongholds.
"This is not the H-bomb; the H-bomb is coming. This is another milestone in showing the youth of this country how elections are being rigged,” he said at the press meet.
Accusing Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of shielding those responsible, Gandhi said, “By not providing information, they are defending murderers of democracy.” He cited alleged instances of deletions and additions in Karnataka and Maharashtra to claim that software-driven manipulation was being used to target voters.
The Election Commission, however, rejected Gandhi’s allegations, calling them “incorrect and baseless”. It reiterated that no vote can be deleted without first giving the affected person an opportunity to be heard.
