The number of suspected and confirmed cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in Maharashtra has risen to 207 after two new cases were detected, a state health official said on Friday.
With these additions, the confirmed case count now stands at 180, of which 20 patients are on ventilator support. While the official death toll remains at eight as per the state health department, a suspected GBS-related fatality has been reported from Kolhapur.
According to a district health official, a 60-year-old woman from Changid tehsil died on February 13. "She experienced paralysis in the lower limbs and was initially admitted to a hospital in Changid before being transferred to Karnataka for treatment. She was later brought back to a hospital in Kolhapur on February 11, where she passed away two days later," the official said.
GBS is a rare neurological disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness, loss of sensation in the limbs, and, in severe cases, difficulty in swallowing or breathing.
