US President Donald Trump announced on social media that India and Pakistan have agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire” following a “long night of talks” mediated by the United States.

Taking to Truth Social, Trump wrote: “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

The announcement by Trump came after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Pakistan Army chief Gen Asim Munir.

"Over the past 48 hours, @VP Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik," Rubio tweeted.

"I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site. We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace," he added.

Shortly before Trump's announcement, the government decided that India will treat any future act of terror on its soil as an "act of war" and respond accordingly - a clear warning to Pakistan amid an intensified conflict with the country following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Deputy PM Ishaq Dar also took to X to announce that India and Pakistan had agreed to a "ceasefire with immediate effect".

"Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!" he wrote on  X.

According to top government sources, the cessation of firing and military action between India and Pakistan was mutually agreed upon following direct communication between the two nations. The Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan initiated the call earlier this afternoon, during which both sides held discussions and reached an understanding to halt hostilities.

Sources clarified that this agreement is strictly limited to stopping military escalation, and no decision has been taken to hold talks on any other issues or at any other venue.

Earlier in the day, India said it has effectively blunted Pakistan's provocative action of employing multiple threats along the western border using drones, long-range weapons and fighter jets, targeting civilian areas and military infrastructure, as the conflict between the two neighbours widened further.

India has blamed Pakistan-based terror groups for a series of violent incidents targeting soldiers and civilians inside its territory for a long period of time, with the April 22 killing of 26 civilians at Kashmir's famous tourist site only the latest in such acts.

The Modi government, since coming to power in 2014, has drastically amped up its response to terror incidents linked to Pakistan, with the armed forces, in their most expansive strike against terrorist organisations, targeting nine terror sites in the neighbouring country and Pak-occupied Kashmir on May 7 under Operation Sindoor.

Pakistan has since then attempted to attack a number of military installations and civilian population along India's northern and western borders. India has said it has responded befittingly.
