Former Uttar Pradesh minister Gayatri Prajapati, currently lodged in Lucknow District Jail, was hospitalised on Tuesday after being injured in a scuffle with another inmate, prison authorities said.
According to the Director General of Prisons, the incident occurred inside the jail hospital when Prajapati got into an altercation with a prisoner on cleaning duty. “The prisoner became enraged and struck him with the sliding part of a cupboard, causing injuries. Immediate medical attention was provided, and his condition is now stable,” the DG’s office said in a statement.
Prajapati, however, alleged that the assault was a targeted attack. Speaking to ANI, he said, “It was a vicious criminal. His name is Biswas… He has been in jail for a long time. I am happy that my life was saved. It all happened suddenly; I had no disputes with anyone.”
Following initial treatment, Prajapati was shifted to King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow for further care. His wife, Maharaji Prajapati, a Samajwadi Party MLA from Amethi, rushed to the hospital after the incident.
The Samajwadi Party expressed concern over the attack. Party chief Akhilesh Yadav demanded a judicial probe. “A fair judicial investigation should be conducted into the deadly attack on former MLA and minister Gayatri Prajapati inside jail. No one is safe anywhere in Uttar Pradesh," he said in a post on X.
Prajapati, a senior Samajwadi Party leader, was arrested in 2017 on rape charges and has been in custody since then.
