A fire broke out on Saturday afternoon at an apartment complex housing Rajya Sabha MPs on Dr BD Marg in central Delhi, triggering panic among residents and prompting a swift emergency response.
According to officials, six fire tenders were rushed to the site, and firefighting operations continued for several hours before the situation was brought under control.
Eyewitnesses said chaos erupted soon after the blaze began, with residents evacuating the building as police and fire personnel helped move people to safety. Photos and videos from the scene showed thick plumes of smoke rising from the building and crowds gathered on the ground floor.
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, no casualties or injuries have been reported. The Delhi Police confirmed that no one was trapped in the building and no hospitalisation was required. Traffic in the vicinity was briefly diverted as a precautionary measure.
The affected complex, located just 200 metres from Parliament House, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2020. Built to replace eight aging bungalows, the redevelopment project added 76 modern flats for Members of Parliament.
A statement from the PMO at the time noted that the project was completed 14% below the sanctioned cost and without any time delay, despite disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Fire Service has strengthened preparedness across the capital ahead of Diwali, deploying additional fire tenders and quick-response vehicles at key locations, including crowded markets, residential zones, and major traffic intersections.
