A FIR was registered late Wednesday night against Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah in Indore district for allegedly making objectionable remarks about Colonel Sofia Qureshi, following the directive of the High Court.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said instructions had been issued to take appropriate action against Minister Shah in compliance with the High Court’s order.
According to a police official, the FIR was filed at the Manpur police station as per the court’s direction. The case has been filed under the following sections of the Indian Penal Code Section 152 (Acts endangering the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India), Section 196(1)(B) (Acts affecting mutual harmony between communities and potentially causing a breach of public peace), Section 197(1)(C) (Remarks targeting a specific community that could disturb communal harmony),
Shah made the controversial statement during a public event in a rural part of Indore district on Monday. While he did not name Colonel Qureshi directly, the remarks were widely interpreted as directed at her.
Colonel Sofia Qureshi has been a key spokesperson for ‘Operation Sindoor’, regularly addressing the media alongside Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh.
In response to the backlash, Minister Shah issued a statement expressing regret, saying he was willing to apologise “ten times” if his words had hurt anyone. He added that he holds deep respect for Colonel Qureshi, claiming he respects her “more than his own sister.”
