Farmer mocks Rahul Gandhi over 'aaloo se sona' remark

A farmer from Rajasthan's Banswara made headlines after he mocked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his "aaloo se sona" remark in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a public interaction on Thursday.

PM Modi was meeting beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) scheme, a flagship initiative aimed at promoting solar energy use in agriculture, with farmers from Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka present during the interaction.

During the session, one farmer praised the scheme and said that the installation of a solar plant on his land had made his dream a reality. He also referenced Rahul Gandhi’s statement from 2017, when the Congress leader suggested that potatoes could be turned into gold.

“Main maanata hoon ki logon ne kaha ki aaloo se sona hoga. Aaloo se sona to nahin hua lekin hamaaree jameen se aapane sona hamen jaroor de diya (I believe that people said that potatoes will give gold. Potatoes did not give gold. But you gave us gold from our land)," the farmer told PM Modi.

The comment drew hearty laughter from the gathering, highlighting the farmer’s humour and quick wit, a report by News18 said.

Meanwhile, the PM also addressed the farmers and lauded them for embracing solar energy and contributing to the country’s green growth trajectory.

“Banswara ke kisaanon ne suraj ki roshni se apne khet ki takdeer badal di hai (the farmers of Banswara have changed the fate of their fields with the power of the sun)," he said, emphasising how the PM-KUSUM scheme allows farmers to become not just food providers, but energy producers as well, by selling surplus electricity to the grid.

The interaction once again brought up Rahul Gandhi’s controversial 2017 statement, which the BJP has frequently cited. In 2017, Rahul Gandhi said that he would deploy such a machine that if one puts potatoes from one side, gold will come out of the other.
