Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh on Friday asserted that India is becoming a global leader in textile manufacturing, adding that every third or fourth bedsheet and towel used in American households is made in India.
He was speaking at Powering Bharat organised by Network18 in collaboration with Moneycontrol, News18 India, and CNBC Awaaz.
On a question about Trump tariffs, Singh said that the US President's decision to impose and then rollback duties "is good for US" and their domestic interests.
"Whatever he [Trump] did was good for his country. But their import market is $100 billion, we export goods worth $10 billion. But my product is largely home-made fiber. In US, every 3rd or 4th bedsheet or towel used in US is made in India. I can guarantee that. India today is a global leader," Singh said.
According to Singh, US is a major importer of Indian textiles and apparel, and India aims to reach $100 billion in textile exports by 2030.
The Union minister added that Indian textile industry is expected to reach $100 billion by 2030 due to combined domestic manufacturing and exports. "Bangladesh, Vietnam not a challenge for India’s textile. India is global leader in spinning," he said.
According to Singh, agriculture is also a key part of textiles as 60 lakh farmers grow cotton in India.
