Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said India is in constant touch with energy suppliers across the world and is working to secure oil and gas, including LNG, from wherever possible to ensure uninterrupted availability amid rising tensions in West Asia and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz.

Addressing the Lok Sabha, Modi said the government is increasing domestic LPG production while simultaneously diversifying import sources to safeguard energy security.

“The government is in constant touch with suppliers across the world, and efforts are being made to ensure oil and gas supplies are received from wherever possible,” he said.

He added that India has significantly widened its energy basket over the past 11 years. “We used to import from 27 countries; now that number has increased to 41.”

The Prime Minister emphasised that ensuring a steady supply of petrol and diesel remains a priority, even as the situation in the Strait of Hormuz becomes increasingly “difficult”.

“Our focus is on minimising inconvenience to households,” he said, underlining the government’s efforts to shield consumers from global disruptions.

Situation in West Asia 'worriesome'

Modi described the situation in West Asia as “worrisome”, noting that the ongoing conflict has been continuing for over three weeks and is impacting both global markets and everyday life.

He highlighted that the region is crucial for India’s energy needs, serving as a key route for a large portion of crude oil and gas imports, including LNG.

India’s stakes in the region go beyond energy, he added, pointing out that nearly one crore Indians live and work in Gulf countries, and a significant number of Indian crew members are employed on commercial vessels operating in these waters.

Given these factors, Modi said India’s concerns are “naturally greater” and stressed the need for a unified national stance.

“It is essential that a unified voice and consensus reach the world regarding this crisis from Parliament,” he said.
