The Election Commission informed RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Friday that forging and using a counterfeit government document is a crime. They have set a deadline for him to submit his "apparently fake" Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) by August 16.
The Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Patna (Sadar), who also serves as the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) for the Digha assembly constituency, issued a fresh letter to Yadav regarding this matter. Last week, the official urged the former Deputy Chief Minister to “hand over for investigation” the voter card he claims to possess, which has not been officially issued.
In the latest correspondence, the ERO stated that a review of the voters’ list from the past several years indicates that the Election Commission has never issued a voter card with the EPIC number that Yadav provided.
“It appears that the aforementioned EPIC card is fake. Forging and using a counterfeit government document is a crime under the law. You are once again requested to surrender your allegedly fake EPIC card by August 16, 2025, by 5 PM,” the letter read.
During a press conference on August 2, Yadav stated that a search conducted using his EPIC number yielded the result "no records found" in the draft electoral rolls prepared as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
When the District Administration in Patna rejected his claim, Yadav alleged that his EPIC number had been altered. He later admitted that he did possess a voter ID card with the EPIC number cited by the officials, but blamed them for issuing two EPIC cards in his name.
