EAM Jaishankar to represent India at Donald Trump's oath taking ceremony on January 20

The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed on Sunday that Jaishankar had received an invitation from the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee to attend the historic event.

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar will represent the India at the swearing-in ceremony of President-Elect Donald J. Trump, who will be  sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on January 20.

The Ministry of External Affairs on Sunday confirmed that Jaishankar had received an invitation from the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee to attend the historic event. During the visit, EAM  is also expected to engage in meetings with representatives of the incoming administration and other dignitaries attending the mega event.

“On the invitation of the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee, External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr S. Jaishankar will represent the Government of India at the Swearing-In Ceremony of President-Elect Donald J Trump as the 47th President of the United States of America,” Centre said in a statement.

Last month, Jaishankar was in the US to kickstart high-level engagements between the incoming Trump 2.0 administration. In his six-day visit to the US from December 24-29, Jaishankar also met high-ranking officials of the outgoing Joe Biden administration, including US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and reviewed the advancement of the US-India partnership in the last four years.

Donald Trump, who won a historic mandate in the November 2024 US presidential election, will take oath for the Oval Office for the second time. His deputy JD Vance will also take oath as the Vice President of the United States. The inauguration ceremony is set to coincide with Martin Luther King Jr Day, a federal holiday.

The United States Congress certified Donald Trump’s victory in November’s presidential election on January 6, clearing a final hurdle for his return to the White House later that month.
