A heart-wrenching scene unfolded outside Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium as a father, who lost his only son in a deadly stampede, pleaded with authorities not to conduct an autopsy. “At least give me his body. Don’t do a postmortem. Don’t cut his body into pieces,” he begged, visibly shattered. “I had only one son, and now I have lost him. He came here without informing me. Now the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister may visit, but no one can bring him back.”

Bengaluru, what have we done to turn this celebration into tragedy? It will haunt us more than any victory celebrations. Within 24 hours, we have to bear the pain of broken families.Deepest condolences. Om Shanti. pic.twitter.com/uzcpZKley5 Bengaluru Post (@bengalurupost1) June 4, 2025
The incident occurred as thousands of fans gathered to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) historic first Indian Premier League (IPL) title win, an emotional milestone for the franchise after 18 years of waiting.
The event, which featured a public felicitation ceremony for the RCB team, had drawn an unexpectedly massive crowd due to free entry. As excitement peaked inside the venue, chaos erupted outside, particularly at the narrow entry points. Eyewitnesses said that the rush to get inside turned into panic, leading to a stampede. By 5 pm, the full scale of the tragedy had become clear.
In addition to the 11 fatalities, dozens were injured. Several attendees fainted in the commotion and were rushed to nearby hospitals. Visuals from the site showed emergency responders carrying unconscious and wounded individuals to safety.
By Thursday morning, autopsies of all deceased victims had been completed, and the bodies had been handed over to their respective families.
Reacting to the tragedy, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ordered an investigation into the lapses that led to the stampede. The probe report is expected within 15 days.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar offered an apology, stating that authorities had made efforts to keep the programme brief. “This was a young and vibrant crowd. You can’t control them with lathis,” he said, responding to criticism about inadequate crowd management.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his grief, offering condolences to the families of the victims. “In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that those who are injured have a speedy recovery,” he said in a post.
