In a setback to the ruling NDA ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, the nomination papers of Seema Singh, the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) candidate from Marhoura in Saran district, were rejected on Saturday on technical grounds.
Seema Singh, a former Bhojpuri actress, had been fielded by Union Minister Chirag Paswan’s party as part of the NDA’s seat-sharing arrangement. Her disqualification came during the scrutiny process, leaving the party scrambling to address the issue.
Responding to the development, Chirag Paswan said, “We have submitted a representation before the Election Commission. The situation has arisen because of a small lapse. Hopefully, it will be resolved.”
Another candidate from the same constituency, former JD(U) leader Altaf Alam Raju, who had filed as an Independent, also saw his nomination papers rejected.
With these exclusions, the Marhoura seat is now expected to witness a direct contest between sitting RJD MLA and former minister Jitendra Kumar Rai and Jan Suraaj Party’s Abhay Singh.
Elections in Marhoura will be held in the first phase on November 6. As of now, nine candidates remain in the fray after four nominations were rejected. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is October 20.
