Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Dinesh Sharma and Union Minister Krishan Pal Gurjar have reportedly renamed the nameplates on their respective Tughlaq Lane residences with “Swami Vivekanand Marg” – a move that aligns with the party legislators’ call to rename various areas of the city.
On Thursday, Sharma hosted a house warming at his newly allotted residence in Tughlaq Lane, Delhi. He took to X and shared pictures of the ‘Graiha Pravesh’ along with his family and wrote, “Today, along with my family, I performed the house warming ceremony of my new residence at Swami Vivekanand Marg (Tughlaq Lane) in New Delhi, as per the rituals and prayers.”
Both Sharma and Gurjar have officially designated Tughlaq Lane in the national capital as Swami Vivekananda Marg, as reflected on the nameplates of their respective residences.
The move comes as several BJP MLAs have put forward proposals to rename various parts of the city -- such as converting Najafgarh Assembly constituency to Nahargarh, Mohammadpur village to Madhavpuram, and transforming Mustafabad into Shivpuri.
Recently, while speaking to ANI, BJP MLA Anil Sharma stated, “The corporation had passed a proposal to change the name of Madhavpuram village long ago. That proposal has been pending in the Assembly for a long time. Till now, there was a government of the Aam Aadmi Party, they must have kept it buried somewhere. I will raise this issue.”
Meanwhile, speaking in the Assembly, BJP MLA Neelam Pahalwan said, “In the 1857 revolt, Raja Nahar Singh fought and included the Najafgarh region in Delhi’s territory. Despite several efforts, including through the then MP Parvesh Verma, we tried to change the name of Najafgarh to ‘Nahargarh’. I hope you all will support us in this.”
There have also been demands to rename Akbar Road in the city where the previous headquarters of the Congress party was located until January this year.
