Delhi News Updates: Delhi logs second-highest May rainfall in 24-hour since 1901, says IMD

The basement of Prateek Grand City in Siddharth Vihar, Ghaziabad, was flooded after the wall of a nearby drain gave way. Multiple vehicles parked in the basement were submerged. Authorities have launched a water removal operation to clear the area.

Chile has officially lifted the tsunami warning and ended evacuation orders issued after a powerful earthquake, according to AFP. Authorities confirmed that the threat has passed and normalcy is being restored.

Delhi received 77 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, making it the second-highest single-day rainfall for the month of May since 1901, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The highest remains 119.3 mm, recorded on May 20, 2021.

A fire broke out at Jayashree Industries in Gujarat’s Vatwa area around 2:30 PM, reportedly in an oil processing unit. According to Chief Fire Officer Amit Dongre, the blaze has now been brought under control. As of now, there is no confirmed information about any injuries or casualties. Further details are awaited.

In a landmark achievement, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) successfully climbed Mt. Makalu (8,485 meters), the fifth highest mountain in the world, on April 19, 2025. This marks the first time any Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) has reached its summit. The ascent was part of an ambitious international mountaineering expedition that also included Mt. Annapurna (8,091 meters). Flagged off from ITBP Headquarters in New Delhi on March 21, 2025, this twin peak mission was a first in ITBP’s history, making the feat even more remarkable as both mountains were being attempted by the Force for the first time.

Three people, including a 17-year-old girl, were killed in an incident of lightning strike in UP on Friday morning. Meanwhile, several people were injured in separate incidents when lightning struck large parts of the state.

The dead include two labourers working on a road project under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in Firozabad. A family trying to cover a haystack with a tarpaulin sheet to protect it from rain was also hit. Police said 17-year-old Diksha died on the spot and her younger sister Sapna suffered critical burn injuries in the lightning strike during heavy rain and thunder in Etah district's Bhagwantpur village. Their father and brother were also injured, PTI reported.

"In 2014, India had 1.25 lakh seafarers. Now, we have more than 3 lakh seafarers in India," PM Modi said.

The Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport is worth ₹8,900 crore. It is India's  first dedicated container transshipment port that represents the transformative advancements being made in India’s maritime sector as part of the unified vision of Viksit Bharat.

A statement about the seaport said, "Vizhinjam Port, having strategic importance, has been identified as a key priority project which will contribute in strengthening India’s position in global trade, enhance logistics efficiency, and reduce reliance on foreign ports for cargo transshipment. Its natural deep draft of nearly 20 meters and location near one of the world’s busiest sea trade routes further strengthen India’s position in global trade.

"Today, I inspected the situation of waterlogging in various areas of Delhi, including Majnu ka Tila, due to rain. I am personally present on the ground with the concerned officials to resolve this problem. Clear instructions were given to all officers to identify places where waterlogging is occurring across Delhi and ensure a solution," the Delhi CM wrote on X.

IMD has issued an advisory in regards with the heavy rainfall that lashed the national capital on Friday. IMD has asked people to keep windows and doors closed and to not travel.

Delhi Airport said, "Due to inclement weather conditions and thunderstorms in Delhi, some flights have been impacted at Delhi Airport. Our on-ground teams are diligently working with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information."
