Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during a Jan Sunvai event, an open house for public grievances, at her residence on Wednesday, reports said. The local BJP unit has condemned the assault in “strongest possible terms”.
News 18 citing sources said that the incident took place during the weekly Jan Sunvai programme when a man in his mid-30s entered, handed over a paper to the chief minister, shouted, slapped her, pulled her hair, and abused her.
Initial reports also suggest that the attacker has been taken into custody, and the Delhi Police have launched an elaborate inquiry into the incident. According to news agency PTI, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva “strongly" condemned the “attack" on the Chief Minister during her weekly ‘Jan Sunwai’ programme, the Delhi BJP said in a message.
The news agency also quoted party sources as saying that Rekha Gupta was “attacked" by a man aged around 35. He first gave the CM some papers during the public hearing and then allegedly attacked her, they said.
According to preliminary reports, senior police officers reached the spot soon after the incident. A senior officer confirmed that the man has been detained and that further inquiry is underway to determine the motive behind the assault. Hindustan Times, citing sources in the chief minister’s office said the CM was rushed to hospital within minutes for a checkup, with the head of her security describing the episode as a “serious physical assault.”
