A massive pan-India inoculation drive against COVID-19 was set in process on January 12 with more than 56 lakh doses of the Covishield vaccine leaving Pune for 13 cities across the country, four days before the vaccinations are scheduled to begin on January 16.
“Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) will begin with its first domestic distribution of the Covishield vaccine consignment from early morning tomorrow and cater to a minimum of 16 destinations,” the airport operator said in a statement.

The first consignment of 2.40 lakh vials of COVID-19 vaccine for Assam and Meghalaya landed at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport on January 12. A freighter ferried 20 large boxes, weighing over 730 kg and containing 2,40,000 vaccine doses, from Pune to Guwahati via Kolkata, Airports Authority of India North East Region's Executive Director M Suresh said. Out of the 20 boxes, 17 are for Assam and three for Meghalaya. Each box has 12,000 doses of vaccine.

The first consignment of COVID-19 vaccines is reaching Lucknow airport on Tuesday evening, an official said.For the vaccination drive to begin on January 16, the first consignment of vaccines is arriving in Lucknow this evening, Additional Chief Secretary Health Amit Mohan Prasad said.
The vaccines will be arriving in cold storages in eight other places in the state soon and from there they will be sent to districts and their block level PHCs and CHCs which are the cold chain points for the vaccination, he said.Additional Chief Secretary, Information, Navneet Sehgal said the vaccination would be done as per the directives of the central government with healthcare workers and volunteers being given jabs in the first phase. COVID-19 vaccine will be made available to all people free of cost in the Union Territory,and the vaccination drive would be held in three phases, Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy said on Tuesday. The full expenditure would be borne by the administration, he told reporters here. In the first round, 14,000 health workers would be inoculated.In the second phase, field staff engaged in carrying out Covid control programme would be vaccinated and it would cover those from police, revenue and local administration departments.In the third, those above 50 and also those having complaints of diabetes, hypertension and cancer would be vaccinated.The CM said he has appealed to the Prime Minister that the vaccine vials for Mahe and Yanam be distributed from neighbouring Kozhikode in Kerala (for Mahe) and Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh (for Yanam). Transporting the vaccines from Puducherry, as soon as it made available by the Centre, to these distant pockets would be practically impossible, particularly in maintaining them in cold storage, he said.

The first batch of Covishield vaccine vials reached Delhi's central storage facility at Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital (RGSSH) Tuesday afternoon, sources said.A SpiceJet flight carrying the vaccine batch landed at the Delhi airport around 10 am on Tuesday, four days ahead of the launch of a nationwide drive against the coronavirus. Thereafter, the Delhi Police formed a "green corridor" to safely transport the vials to the hospital, the Delhi government's largest COVID-19 facility."The truck carrying the vaccines arrived at the hospital around 3:10 pm," a source said.
A special cold storage facility has been created at RGSSH to store the vaccine vials.Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGI Airport) Rajeev Ranjan said adequate security arrangements have been made at the storage site, and Police Control Room (PCR) vans will also cover them in their patrolling plans.Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahadra) Amit Sharma said, "We have deployed the personnel at the storage area of the Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital."Earlier, officials said more than 2.54 lakh doses of Covishield, developed by Oxford University and British-Swedish firm AstraZeneca and manufactured by the Serum Institute of India, will be delivered at RGSSH.
"The storage facility at RGSSH can stock up to about 50,000 vaccine vials, and all arrangements have been made there to keep it in a temperature-controlled environment," a senior official had said. (PTI)

The Telangana government on Tuesday received the first consignment of 3.64 lakh doses of COVID-19 vaccine Covishield from the Pune-based Serum Institute. The vaccine arrived in a freighter aircraft of SpiceJet. "The state government has received 3.64 lakh crore doses of Serum Institutes Covishield vaccine from the Centre. The vaccine will be sent to 139 centres, where the vaccination drive will begin from January 16," Telangana Public health Department Director G Srinivas Rao said. From January 18, vaccination in the rest of the centres will be launched, the official added. Arrangements have been made to administer the vaccine at over 1400 counters located in 1213 centres all over the state and it will cover 3.10 lakh frontline workers, he said. The Covishield containers landed at the Airport at around 11.30 AM and were transported from there to the state vaccine storage centre at Koti here. Security at the airport's cargo centre was beefed up and the vaccine containers were sent to the Governments facility with police escort, Shamshabad DCP Prakash Reddy said. Security was also beefed up at the vaccine storage centre. A senior government official shifted the consignment to freezers after performing'puja'.
