The new headquarters, which will house several Congress departments and organisations, including the Mahila Congress, Youth Congress, and NSUI, promises to be a central hub for the party’s future activities.

The Congress will inaugurate its new headquarters, 'Indira Gandhi Bhawan,' on January 15, in a grand event, marking its 139-year legacy. Scheduled for 10:00 am at Delhi's 9A, Kotla Road, the event will be presided over by Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP), along with Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress President, and Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

The Congress' previous headquarters at 24, Akbar Road, has been its base since 1978. It was provided to the party during a challenging period in its history, following the Emergency and the defeat in the 1977 elections.

The inauguration event will see the participation of around 400 prominent leaders from across the country, including members of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), former Chief Ministers, Union Ministers, MPs, and key Congress figures.

'Indira Gandhi Bhawan' is designed to meet the evolving needs of the party, equipped with modern facilities to support administrative, organisational, and strategic activities. The foundation stone for the building was laid by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi in December 2009. Although construction faced delays due to financial challenges and political shifts, the building is now complete and ready for inauguration.

Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, on Tuesday, took to microblogging site X to share the news. "It is time for us to move ahead with the times and embrace the new," he wrote, highlighting that the building was constructed during Sonia Gandhi’s tenure as party president.

"Situated at 9A, Kotla Road, New Delhi, the Indira Gandhi Bhawan is designed to meet the evolving needs of the party and its leaders, featuring modern facilities to support administrative, organisational, and strategic activities. This iconic building reflects the Congress Party’s forward-looking vision while paying homage to its extraordinary past, which has shaped the political and social fabric of India," he further noted.

The ceremony will see attendance from senior leaders, including CWC members, Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) Presidents, Congress Legislative Party (CLP) Leaders, MPs, and other distinguished figures. Notably, former CMs, ex-PCC Presidents, and Union Ministers are also expected at the historic event.

The new headquarters, which will house several Congress departments and organisations, including the Mahila Congress, Youth Congress, and NSUI, promises to be a central hub for the party’s future activities. The shift to the new building marks a new chapter for the Congress as it continues its journey toward shaping India’s democratic landscape.
