The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) upgraded the security of Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama on Thursday following a threat assessment report from the Intelligence Bureau (IB). Over the years, intelligence reports have pointed to potential threats to his life from various sources, including China-backed groups.
Under the Z-category security, he will get a total of 33 security staff in Himachal Pradesh's Dharamshala and outside. News agency PTI quoted its sources as saying said the Dalai Lama would be secured by a Z-category protection cover of CRPF commandos in all parts of the country.
He had a small protection cover of the Himachal Pradesh Police which was extended when he travelled to Delhi or any other place by the local police. The government has now granted him a uniform security cover across country
A team of about 30 CRPF commandos will work in shifts to secure the Dalai Lama.
Lama has been living in India since 1959 after fleeing Chinese rule in Tibet. In view of his global influence and the sensitive geopolitical tensions surrounding Tibet, the India provides him with high-level security cover.
