A new law has been implemented across Chhattisgarh, permitting shops to operate 24/7 as long as employees are given a weekly day off and allowing women to work at night with necessary safety precautions. This law applies to all establishments with more than 10 employees, an official confirmed on Saturday.
The State Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 2017, along with the 2021 Rules, also specify registration fees ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000 based on the number of employees, a rise from the earlier fees of Rs 100 to Rs 250, the official stated.
The new law allows shops and establishments to operate 24/7, provided employees are given a weekly day off, and women can work at night as long as safety measures are followed. Employers must keep electronic records of their employees and submit an annual report via an online portal by February 15 every year, the official reported.
"All shops and establishments need to get registered within six months of the implementation of the new Act. Existing registered shops must obtain a Labour Identification Number (LIN) within six months at no extra cost. The registration of shops and establishments will be done by the Labour Department. Earlier, it was done by civic bodies," he added.
The official stated that the new law will ease business operations in the sector and offer special advantages to small traders, as the flexibility in shop hours will boost business activities.
He also mentioned that the new rules and regulations will not apply to liquor shops.
