Ahead of the upcoming election, the Delhi police has registered  cases against AAP candidate-chief minister Atishi for allegedly violating the model code of conduct. The Delhi CM has been booked in two cases.

In the first case, Atishi is said to have arrived at Fateh Singh Marg with 50-60 supporters in 10 cars. The second case has been registered against Atishi’s supporters for obstructing government work and attacking police personnel.

The case was filed as the two AAP members-Ashmit and Sagar Mehta - were arrested for "obstructing and assaulting" the head constable of Govindpuri Police station at around 1 am on Tuesday, police said.

However, Atishi attacked the  Delhi Police claiming that she was being punished for speaking out against her challenger, BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri, for "openly violating the code of conduct.

Atishi responds

"The Election Commission is also amazing! Ramesh Bidhuri ji's family members are openly violating the code of conduct. No action is being taken against them. I filed a complaint and called the police and @ECISVEEP, and they filed a case against me! Rajiv Kumar ji: How much will you ruin the electoral process," said the Delhi CM on X.

Meanwhile, the police has booked BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri's nephew.  "FIR No. 106/25 is registered u/s 221/132/121(1)/3(5) BNS at 0S Govindpuri for causing obstruction in discharge of public duty & assault while on duty. Further investigation is in progress," said the Delhi police.

What is the Model Code of Conduct?

The MCC is a set of guidelines issued to regulate political parties and candidates prior to elections. The rules range from issues related to speeches, polling day, polling booths, portfolios, the content of election manifestos, processions, and general conduct, so that free and fair elections are conducted.

When does it come into effect?

The MCC comes into force from the date the election schedule is announced until the date that results are out.
