A 23-year-old techie was killed after a gas cylinder exploded at a paying guest (PG) accommodation in Bengaluru's Kundalahalli on Monday evening. Three people also sustained injuries in the blast which took place on the ground floor of a seven-storey building with 43 rooms.
The deceased has been identified as Ballari native Aravind, who was employed as a senior analyst with IT services and consulting company Capgemini.
According to police, a commercial-grade gas cylinder was involved in the blast, though the exact cause of ignition is yet to be determined.
The victim was on the terrace of Seven Hills Sai Co-Living Paying Guest facility when he noticed smoke on the ground floor. The accommodation falls under the HAL Police Station limits. "There was some smoke on the ground floor. The victim and two others, who were on the terrace, came down to check what had happened. It is believed that the blast occurred at that time, killing Aravind," said K Parashurama, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Whitefield).
Fire tenders and emergency services, along with local police, rushed to the spot and carried out evacuation and fire-control operations.
Among the injured, two are employees of private companies and one works as a helper at the PG accommodation. The injured are currently undergoing treatment at Brookefield Hospital in Bengaluru.
A case has been registered against the PG management and further investigation is underway, police said.
