Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday launched a salvo at Arvind Kejriwal and said that the Delhi chief minister, who came in a small car and promised to change Indian politics, has built a "sheesh mahal" for himself.

Seizing on BJP's "sheesh mahal" attack on the former Delhi chief minister, Rahul suggested that Kejriwal never lived up to the honest image that he initially projected to come to power in the national capital.

"Kejriwal Ji says whatever comes to mind. When he first came, he had a small car and promised to do a new kind of politics. He climbed up the electric poll and vowed to change Delhi. You remember this? And when the poor people actually needed him, he disappeared. When there were riots in Delhi, he was nowhere to be seen," Rahul said during a rally in Delhi's Okhla.

Rahul said that the AAP supremo promised to introduce "clean politics" in India but Delhi saw its "biggest liquor scam" under his leadership.

"He also said that he will bring clean politics. And then Delhi witnessed the biggest liquor scam. And you saw the pictures of his house. Narendra Modi evicted me from my home. I gave the keys back immediately and said I don't need the bungalow. But Kejirwal lives in a mahal. He lives in a Sheesh Mahal. This is the truth," he said.

Rahul claimed that he does not know about other parties but "Kejriwal surely fears Narendra Modi".

"We don't want an India of hatred, fear ... minorities, Dalits, backwards should not fear anything," the Rae Bareli MP said.

Rahul said that Kejriwal is doing self-certification which is done by only those who are "dishonest".

BJP has repeatedly attacked Kejriwal for allegedly spending crores of rupees to renovate his house, which the party describes as "sheesh mahal".

Elections in Delhi will take place in a single phase on February 5 and the counting of votes will take place on February 8.
