A 56-year-old domestic worker was allegedly raped inside a private bus by its driver in Sector 17, Faridabad, on the night of February 9. The driver, identified as Roshan Lal, was arrested along with the conductor, Nanhe, who is accused of "keeping watch" on passersby as the crime was being committed.
According to the victim, the woman, who works in several flats, was waiting for transportation around 6 PM on the Sector 17 bypass road to go home in Sector 56. She said that a white bus pulled over, and the driver offered her a ride. Upon boarding, she realised that she was the only passenger on the bus.
When she questioned the conductor about the bus being empty, she was allegedly told that more passengers would board during the journey. However, the driver stopped the bus at an isolated location.
According to a Times of India report, the conductor allegedly closed all the windows while the driver sexually assaulted her. The conductor remained at the scene throughout, keeping watch on others.
After the assault, the accused dropped the woman at Sector 17 and threatened her with dire consequences if she reported it to the police. Despite the threats, the woman immediately contacted the police, and a case under Section 64 (rape) of the BNS was filed at the Sector 17 Police Station.
The woman was sent for a medical examination, and a thorough investigation was launched by the Women’s Police Station in Sector 16. CCTV footage from the area revealed that the bus was used to transport workers of a private company located in neighboring Gurugram.
The police arrested the bus driver, Roshan Lal (35), from Paniyala village in Jaipur, and conductor Nanhe, a resident of Hardhattapur village in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, on Tuesday. During the investigation, the police came to know that the bus was used to transport workers from Gurugram to Faridabad.
Roshan had been working as the driver for three months, and Nanhe was employed for nearly six weeks. Following their interrogation, both accused were presented before a local court and remanded into judicial custody. The bus has been seized.
The police have assured further investigation to ensure justice for the victim.
