India made 'fundamental error' by backing 'criminal' acts in Canada: Justin Trudeau

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that India had made a "fundamental error" as an escalating row over the killing of a Sikh separatist on Canadian soil last year saw both countries withdraw their ambassadors.

"The government of India made a fundamental error in thinking that they could engage in supporting criminal activity against Canadians here on Canadian soil, whether it be murders or extortion or other violent acts," Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa, referring to allegations made by Canadian federal police against Indian intelligence.

A wide variety of entities in Canada and abroad was used by Indian agents to collect information and then used the details to target members of the South Asian community, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) alleged on Monday.

The RCMP's comments came on a day India expelled six Canadian diplomats and announced withdrawing its High Commissioner from Canada after strongly dismissing Ottawa's allegations linking the envoy to a probe into the killing of Sikh extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

India has been strongly rejecting Canada's charge of involvement of Indian agents in Nijjar's killing last year.

The RCMP has been investigating the murder.

The ties between India and Canada came under severe strain following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations in September last year of a "potential" involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Nijjar.

New Delhi rejected Trudeau's charges as "absurd". India has been maintaining that the main issue has been that of Canada giving space to pro-Khalistani elements operating from Canadian soil with impunity.

"Investigations have revealed that Indian diplomats and consular officials based in Canada leveraged their official positions to engage in clandestine activities, such as collecting information for the government of India, either directly or through their proxies; and other individuals who acted voluntarily or through coercion," the RCMP claimed in a statement.

New Delhi has already trashed charges against its diplomats and officials.

Evidence also shows that a wide variety of entities in Canada and abroad have been used by agents of the government of India to collect information, the RCMP alleged.

"Some of these individuals and businesses were coerced and threatened into working for the government of India. The information collected for the Government of India is then used to target members of the South Asian community," it said.

"This evidence was presented directly to government of India officials, urging their cooperation in stemming the violence and requesting our law enforcement agencies work together to address these issues," it said.

Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement:

"The news and allegations today from the RCMP are extremely concerning and must be taken very seriously.

"Any foreign interference from any country, including India, is unacceptable and must be stopped. Our government's first job is to keep our citizens safe from foreign threats.

"We expect the full criminal prosecution of anyone and everyone who has threatened, murdered or otherwise harmed Canadian citizens.

"For nine years the Liberal government has failed to keep our people safe or to take national security and foreign interference seriously.

Because of that, Canada has become a playground for these activities."

On Government of India's decision to withdraw High Commissioner and other targeted diplomats and officials from Canada, Canadian journalist Daniel Bordman said to ANI, "There are elements within the Khalistani apparatus, they are all over this...The Khalistani elements are in full attack mode. They are taking this as a total victory and slamming India...Justin Trudeau is set to speak later today...But the vast majority of Canadians are incredibly fed up with this government. Don't believe the institutions. Don't see the media as credible. Doesn't see Justin Trudeau as credible. So many Canadians will just look at this, shrug their shoulders and probably even side with India..."

Canada expelled six top Indian diplomats on Monday, including the country's ambassador, an Ottawa government source told AFP, after New Delhi said it had recalled the officials.

The expulsions came as the two governments have rowed over the Indian ambassador and others being declared "persons of interest" in an investigation into the killing last year of a Sikh separatist leader on Canadian soil.

Earlier today, MEA released a statement saying that India has received a "diplomatic communication from Canada yesterday suggesting that the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats are 'persons of interest' in a matter related to an investigation in that country". The matter was in reference to the killing of Nijjar, which took place on Canadian soil last year. The MEA strongly rejected the "political agenda" behind Trudeau government's move to rake up the Indian link.

In what appeared to be a retaliatory action, Canada also expelled multiple Indian diplomats after a similar move by New Delhi. The Washington Post, quoting unnamed Canadian officials, reported that Canada on Monday ordered six Indian diplomats to leave the country, including High Commissioner Sanjay Verma and the top consular official in Toronto.

Soon after putting out a hard-hitting statement denouncing Canada for dragging the names of Indian diplomats in the probe into Hardeep Singh Nijjar's killing, the Centre summoned Canadian Charge d'Affaires (CDA) Stewart Wheelers. During the meeting, MEA's Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar underlined to Wheelers that in an atmosphere of extremism and violence, the Trudeau government's actions "endangered" the safety of Indian diplomats and other officials.

A note on the Canadian PM's website says that Trudeau will hold a press conference on investigative efforts related to violent criminal activity occurring in Canada "with connections to India". He will be joined by the foreign minister Mélanie Joly and others.

China vowed on Monday that it would never renounce the "use of force" to retake Taiwan, after it ended a day of military drills around the self-ruled island.

In a hard-hitting response, India, strongly rejecting the allegations against High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma, described the charges as "preposterous imputations" and ascribes them to the "political agenda of the Trudeau government that is centred around vote bank politics".

The government today appointed the Indian Coast Guard’s Additional Director General S Paramesh as the new chief of the maritime force. Promoted to the rank of Director General, he will assume his new appointment on October 15.

Lebanon's Hezbollah said it targeted a military barracks in central Israel on Monday, the latest attack claim after a deadly drone strike on an Israeli military base a day earlier.

Prime Minister Trudeau’s hostility to India has long been in evidence. In 2018, his visit to India, which was aimed at currying favour with a vote bank, rebounded to his discomfort. The European Union condemns all attacks against United Nations missions, the union's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in a response to targeting of the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, by the Israel Defence Forces.

"Such attacks against UN peacekeepers constitute a grave violation of international law and are totally unacceptable. These attacks must stop immediately," Borrell said in a statement on behalf of the EU published Sunday night.

China on Monday warned that efforts towards "Taiwan independence" and peace were "irreconcilable" as its military launched drills around the self-ruled island.

"Taiwan independence and peace in the Taiwan Strait are irreconcilable," foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said, warning that "provocations from pro-independence forces will inevitably face countermeasures".

The European Union's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell Monday denounced as "completely unacceptable" a series of Israeli attacks that have injured United Nations peacekeepers in southern Lebanon.

"The 27 (EU) members agreed on asking Israeli to stop attacking UNIFIL," Borrell told reporters ahead of a meeting of the bloc's foreign ministers in Luxembourg. "It's completely unacceptable attacking United Nations troops," he said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met in Muscat on Monday with Mohammed Abdelsalam, a senior official from Yemen's Iran-backed Huthi movement, according to his office.

Police have booked a man and detained around 30 people in connection with the communal violence that broke out in a village here and led to the death of a 22-year-old, officials said on Monday.

The face-off occurred on Sunday in the Mahrajganj area of Mansoor village when a Durga idol immersion procession passed through. Around half a dozen people were injured in stone pelting and firing.

Superintendent of Police (SP), Bahraich, Vrinda Shukla said 25-30 people have been detained and efforts are on to bring normalcy in the areas affected by disturbance.

She added that an adequate police force has been deployed.

Anticipating a rise in pollution levels as winter approaches, the Delhi government on Monday imposed an immediate ban on the production, storage, sale and use of firecrackers across the city, effective till January 1.

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai made the announcement and urged Delhi residents to support the government's efforts to curb air pollution.

In a tweet, Rai said, "In view of the increasing pollution in winter, a ban has been imposed on the production, storage, sale, and use of firecrackers from today till January 1." Israel's army chief said Monday a Hezbollah drone strike on a military training base that killed at least four soldiers at the weekend was "difficult and painful".

The ‘fast-unto-death’ by junior doctors in West Bengal to press for their demands in the wake of the RG Kar hospital incident entered the 10th day on Monday, even as another medic was admitted to hospital after his health condition deteriorated, officials said.

Pulastha Acharya of the NRS Medical College and Hospital was taken to hospital on Sunday night after he complained of severe stomach pain, they said.

Three of the junior medics who were on hunger strike in Kolkata and Siliguri city in the northern part of the state were earlier hospitalised in view of their health condition.

"Pulastha is in the CCU and his parameters have deteriorated. We have formed a medical board to treat him," a senior doctor of the NRS Medical College and Hospital told PTI.

Delhi Police Special Cell has arrested 5 people from Gujarat. They manufacture drugs and give them to a pharma solution company in Delhi NCR, after which the company sends them to Delhi and other places. The people arrested by the Special Cell from Gujarat include the owner and the mediator. All of them were involved in the drug syndicate for a long time.

Delhi Police Special Cell and Gujarat Police on October 13 recovered 518 kg of cocaine during a search of a drug-related company in Ankleshwar, Gujarat. A New York-bound Air India flight from Mumbai was on Monday diverted to the Delhi airport following a security concern arising out of a bomb threat in the aircraft, officials said here.

"The aircraft is currently stationed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, and all standard safety protocols are being diligently followed to ensure the safety of the passengers and crew on board," a senior police officer said.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te held a "high-level" security meeting Monday over China's military drills around the island, a senior government official said.

"Regarding this morning's exercise, the president has also convened a high-level national security meeting and issued quite clear instructions on how to respond to China's military threat and the responses of relevant ministries," Joseph Wu, secretary-general of the National Security Council, told reporters.

Israel's military said a Hezbollah drone had killed four soldiers at one of its northern bases Sunday, as it expanded its bombardments of Lebanon and troops battled militants across the border.

The United Nations said on Sunday Israeli tanks had burst through the gates of a base of its peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon, the latest accusation of Israeli violations and attacks denounced by its own allies.

The UNIFIL peacekeeping force said two Israeli Merkava tanks destroyed the main gate of a base and forcibly entered before dawn on Sunday morning. After the tanks left, shells exploded 100 metres (yards) away, releasing smoke which blew across the base and sickened U.N. personnel, it said in a statement.

The United States said on Sunday it will send U.S. troops to Israel along with an advanced U.S. anti-missile system, in a highly unusual deployment meant to bolster the country's air defenses following missile attacks by Iran.

U.S. President Joe Biden said the move was meant "to defend Israel," which is weighing an expected retaliation against Iran after Tehran fired more than 180 missiles at Israel on Oct 1.

The United States has been privately urging Israel to calibrate its response to avoid triggering a broader war in the Middle East, officials say, with Biden publicly voicing his opposition to an Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear sites and his concerns about a strike on Iran's energy infrastructure.
