'We cannot imagine country’s development without progress of Northeast. The entire country is getting acquainted with history and heritage of Northeast as Centre is emphasising cultural connectivity, said PM Modi in Guwahati.

"Today, India is working to improve the lives of villagers, the poor, Adivasis, tribes, and Dalits. Bhupen Hazarika was a hero of India’s unity. Decades ago, when the North East was a victim of neglect, the North East was left to burn in the fire of violence and separatism, Bhupen da kept giving voice to the unity of India even in those difficult times. He dreamt of a prosperous North East. He sang songs for the North East. He sang songs for Assam...He loved Arunachal as much and that is why the Chief Minister of Arunachal has come specially today... Today, we are working day and night to realise his dreams for the North East," PM Modi said in Guwahati.

PM Modi said in Guwahati, "Bhupen Hazarika dedicated his entire life to music. His music was special because it reflected the ideologies and principles he lived by. His immense love for Maa Bharti is evident in his songs, as he carried the vision of a united and great India throughout his life.”

Addressing the 100th birth anniversary celebration of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, PM Modi said in Guwahati, “I am fortunate to be able to participate in the 100th birth anniversary of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika.” He said, “This is the centenary year of the ‘Sudhakantha,’ who gave voice to the dreams of India and connected music with emotions.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday arrived in Guwahati on a two-day visit to Assam and will attend a special tribute meeting for legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika, officials said. The PM will inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for projects worth over Rs 19,000 crore on Sunday. The PM arrived here from Manipur, where he visited Churachandpur and Imphal. He drove straight to the venue of the Bhupen Hazarika centenary celebrations at the Veterinary Ground in Khanapara area in Guwahati.

"Today, from this land of Manipur, I will also talk to my colleagues in Nepal. Nepal is a friend of India, a close friend. We are connected by shared history, by faith, and are moving forward together. Today, on behalf of the countrymen, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Smt. Sushila ji on assuming charge as the Prime Minister of the interim government in Nepal," says PM Modi in Imphal.

"I am confident that she will pave the way for peace, stability and prosperity in Nepal. Sushila ji's taking oath as the first woman Prime Minister of Nepal is a very good example of women's empowerment. Today, I will praise every person in Nepal who has kept the democratic values ​​supreme even in such an unstable environment," he says.

"Similarly, I salute the valour of our brave martyr Deepak Chingakham. The country will always remember his sacrifice during Operation Sindoor. I had said that Indian culture is incomplete without Manipuri culture. And without the players of Manipur, the sports of India are also incomplete. The youth of Manipur is a youth who gives his whole heart and soul for the pride of the tricolour," he adds.

“The government has significantly reduced GST, which will bring double benefits to the people of Manipur. Many daily-use items will now become cheaper, and the cost of cement and house construction will also come down. This will further boost development," says PM Modi in Imphal.

“Be it Imphal or other parts of Manipur, new opportunities are being created for startups. IT special economic zones will further boost these startups. The first building of this zone has already been completed. The demand for a new civil secretariat was long-standing, and that has also been fulfilled," says PM Modi in Imphal.

"Any kind of violence in Manipur is unfortunate. This violence is a great injustice to our ancestors and our future generations. Therefore, we have to take Manipur forward on the path of peace and development and we have to do it together," says PM Modi in Imphal.

"We have to take inspiration from Manipur's contribution in the freedom struggle of India and in the defence of India. It was the land of Manipur where the Indian National Army hoisted the Indian flag for the first time. Netaji Subhash called Manipur the gateway to India's freedom. This land has given many heroic sacrifices," he says.

"Our government is moving forward taking inspiration from every such great personality of Manipur. Our government has taken another big step. Mount Harriet in Andaman and Nicobar Islands has been renamed as Mount Manipur. This is a tribute of 140 crore countrymen of India to the Manipuri freedom fighters..." he adds.

“Among the projects launched today, two are very important, the Manipur Urban Road Project worth over Rs 3,600 crore and the Manipur Info-Tech Development Project worth over Rs 500 crore. These projects will strengthen road infrastructure in Imphal and infuse new energy into Manipur’s bright future," says PM Modi.

"A new era of infrastructure development has begun in Manipur. The pace of building roads and national highways in Manipur has also increased many times. Work is also being done at a fast pace to reach every village here," he says.

"I am satisfied to have worked for the infrastructure and roads for Manipur," he adds.

In April 2023, the Manipur High Court directed the state government to consider the long-pending demand for inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list. The order heightened anxieties among tribal groups, particularly the Kukis, who feared it would open protected hill areas to Meitei settlement.

On 3 May 2023, the All Tribal Students’ Union of Manipur (ATSUM) organised a “Tribal Solidarity March” across the hill districts to protest the directive. The protest quickly turned violent in Churachandpur and spread across the state, with homes and villages torched, churches and temples attacked, and thousands displaced.

Police armouries were looted, leaving thousands of weapons stolen. Within weeks, Manipur was effectively divided into two zones: the valley, dominated by Meiteis, and the hills, dominated by Kukis, separated by a buffer zone patrolled by central forces.

The Meiteis, making up around 53% of the population, primarily live in the Imphal Valley, which covers only about 10% of the state’s land, and are predominantly Hindus, with about 8% Muslims known as Meitei Pangals.
