An international para-weightlifting athlete was killed after he was beaten up at a wedding ceremony in Haryana's Rohtak.
The victim, Rohit, was beaten up after he objected to a man making derogatory remarks against women in a marriage procession.
India Today reported that Rohit was attacked by a dozen wedding guests and was beaten up using lethal weapons. He was admitted to PGIMS in Rohtak but died during treatment.
The incident happened in Rohtak's Bhiwani village, where Rohit, who also operated a gymkhana apart from being a para athlete, had gone to attend the wedding of his friend Jatin's relative.
India Today reported that a person named Rahul made derogatory remarks, to which Rohit objected, leading to an argument that was stopped by the guests at the wedding.
However, the situation went out of control when Rahul stopped his car while returning home and attacked Rohit along with other people.
Rohit's brother-in-law said that eyewitnesses recall that a mob of 18-20 people took Rohit's life by beating him with sticks and rods.
The two soon called the police, and they escorted Rohit to the local hospital. He was later transferred to the PGIMS, where he died during his ongoing treatment.
Following the incident, the local police registered a case and started investigating the matter. They are presently looking for the accused.
Talking about the incident, a local police officer told India Today that a fallout occurred over clicking selfies, and as a result, several youth attacked Rohit and his friend. Rohit sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital, where he died.
