The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday strongly criticised Bangladesh interim government’s inaction over the recent attack on the ancestral home of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

Addressing a press briefing, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra condemned the behaviour of the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government over the incident.

“…The behaviour of the Bangladesh interim government of Muhammad Yunus is not appropriate. No action has been taken yet. They could not protect such a significant international monument. A deplorable message goes out to the world. BJP condemns this behaviour of the interim government,” he said.

A mob attacked and vandalised the ancestral home of Tagore in Bangladesh's Sirajganj district, leading authorities to constitute a three-member committee to investigate the incident, according to media reports on Wednesday.

“Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore was no ordinary figure. He was not just a literary icon; he was a man of diversity, who gave a lot to the world, he was man with personality beyond borders... Media reports suggest that this attack was carried out by members of organisations like Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefazat-e-Islam,” Patra added.

On June 8, a visitor went to the Kachharibari, also known as Rabindra Kachharibari or Rabindra Memorial Museum, located in Sirajganj district, with his family. There, he got into an altercation with an employee at the entrance over the motorcycle parking fee, bdnews24.com reported.

Later, the visitor was allegedly confined in an office room and physically assaulted. Agitated over the incident, locals held a protest by forming a human chain. Later, a mob attacked and vandalised the auditorium of the Kachhari Bari and beat a director of the institution.

Following the incident, the Department of Archeology constituted a three-member probe committee to investigate the attack, BSS news agency reported.
