The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday released its first list of candidates for Assam assembly elections which will be held in a single phase on April 9.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will contest from Jalukbari assembly constituency while ex-Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi will fight from Dispur. A Congressman for over five decades, Bordoloi resigned from the grand old party on Tuesday and joined the BJP on Wednesday.
Jalukbari is widely regarded as a stronghold of Sarma, who has won every Assembly election from the seat since 2001, including 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021.
Meanwhile, Bordoloi—known for his strong grassroots presence in the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency, which he has won twice on a Congress ticket—has been shifted to Dispur, a seat that falls under the Guwahati parliamentary constituency.
Former Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah, who joined BJP on Thursday will contest from Bihpuria.
