Upendra Kushwaha, chief of the Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM), has been fielded as the fourth candidate by the BJP-led NDA in Bihar as part of its strategy to secure victory on the strength of its own votes in the March 16 Rajya Sabha elections, according to Indian Express.
Meanwhile, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) is attempting to rally the Opposition behind its candidate AD Singh for the fifth seat.
Each candidate requires the support of 41 MLAs to secure a seat in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. With 202 MLAs in the 243-member Bihar Legislative Assembly, the ruling NDA is comfortably placed to win four seats, while its fifth candidate would need the backing of just three more MLAs from outside the alliance.
On the other hand, the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan currently has 35 MLAs and will require the support of at least six additional legislators to secure one seat in the Upper House.
