Bihar Government Formation News: Nitish Kumar to take oath as CM today

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and IT Minister Nara Lokesh will attend Nitish Kumar’s swearing-in as Bihar chief minister on November 20. The NDA’s sweeping victory in the Bihar Assembly polls has cleared the path for the JD(U) leader to return to office.

“CM Chandrababu and Minister Nara Lokesh will attend the swearing-in ceremony of Nitish Kumar as Bihar CM,” a press release said, adding that both leaders had received invitations for the event.

Union minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan on Wednesday said that the swearing-in ceremony of the next chief minister of Bihar will be a grand event, with the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He underlined that the Bharitya Janata Party (BJP) will wipe out the opposition parties in the upcoming elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Assam.

"The NDA has achieved a historic victory, and the people of Bihar have reposed their complete faith in the NDA. As grand as this victory is, our swearing-in ceremony, which will also include the presence of the Prime Minister, will be equally grand," Paswan said.

JD(U) supremo Nitish Kumar on Wednesday submitted his resignation as the head of the outgoing NDA government in Bihar to Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, state BJP president Dilip Jaiswal said.

The governor accepted his resignation and asked him to continue as caretaker chief minister until a new government is formed, Jaiswal told reporters.

Kumar was accompanied by Union minister Chirag Paswan, RLM chief Upendra Kushwaha and Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya during his visit to Raj Bhavan.

Kumar will take oath as chief minister for a record 10th time at Patna’s historic Gandhi Maidan at 11 am on Thursday.

Nitish Kumar was on Wednesday named the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) legislature party. He is set to take oath as the chief minister of Bihar for a historic 10th time.

Samrat Chaudhary has been elected the leader and Vijay Kumar Sinha has been elected the deputy leader of the BJP legislative party.

Nitish Kumar has been elected as the leader of JD(U) legislative party as oath taking ceremony of new Bihar government is set to take place on November 20.

JD(U) working president Sanjay Kumar Jha said, "Today at 11 am, there is a meeting of the JD(U) Legislature Party in which our Chief Minister, our leader Nitish Kumar ji, will be elected as the leader as per the due process. Then at 3 pm, there will be a meeting of the NDA Legislature Party in the Central Hall of the Assembly, where he will be elected as the leader of the NDA alliance Legislature Party. In the evening, we will meet the Governor, and the process of government formation will begin." JD(U) leader Vijay Kumar Chaudhary also said, "The election was fought under the leadership Nitish Kumar, naturally he will be elected as the leader of NDA legislative party.”

All NDA allies, the JD(U), BJP, Chirag Paswan’s LJP (RV), Jitan Ram Manjhi’s HAM-S and Upendra Kushwaha’s RLM, are expected to find a place in the new cabinet. The LJP (RV) is likely to receive three berths, while HAM-S and the RLM may get one each. Around 16 BJP leaders and 14 from the JD(U), along with Nitish Kumar, are set to be sworn in.

Within the NDA, back-channel discussions are underway over cabinet allocations. According to JD(U) sources, five to six new faces from the BJP and JD(U) are likely to be inducted. JD(U) state president and Mahnar MLA Umesh Singh Kushwaha is among the probable entrants.

In the opposition camp, the RJD elected Tejashwi Yadav as its legislature party leader, spokesperson Shakti Singh said on Tuesday. Lalu Prasad, Rabri Devi, Misa Bharti and senior party figures were present at the meeting.

Bihar BJP chief Dilip  Jaiswal said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior central leaders, the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister will attend the upcoming oath-taking ceremony on November 20, along with supporters who delivered the NDA its mandate.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday appointed Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya as the central observer for the election of the legislature party leader in Bihar. Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and former Union minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti have been made co-observers.

Among the Mahagathbandhan alliance, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) won 25 seats, the Indian National Congress six, the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (Liberation) [CPI(ML)(L)] two, the Indian Inclusive Party (IIP) one, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] one seat.

All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) secured five seats, while the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) won one seat.

The Bihar assembly elections were held in two phases on November 6 and 11. Bihar recorded a historic 67.13 per cent voter turnout, the highest since 1951, with women voters outpacing men (71.6% vs 62.8%)

The NDA registered a historic landslide victory in the 2025 Bihar elections, winning 202 of the 243 seats, while the Mahagathbandhan could only secure 35 seats. The alliance secured a three-fourths majority in the 243-member Bihar Assembly, marking the second time the NDA crossed the 200-seat mark in state polls. In 2010, it had won 206 seats.

In the NDA, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 89 seats, Janata Dal (United) won 85, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) (LJPRV) won 19, Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) (HAMS) won five, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha won four seats.

BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh took a jibe at the opposition, saying that the people of Bihar punished the "princes and princesses of the robber gang" by putting faith in Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and bringing the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to power in Bihar. He further slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, saying that nobody considers him a leader. Speaking on the election of the legislative party leader, he said that the NDA's senior leaders will make an informed decision after thorough discussion.

The current assembly of Bihar will be dissolved today. Several other ministers will take oath along with the Chief Minister at Patna's historic Gandhi Maidan on November 20.

Nitish Kumar will submit a letter of support from all alliance partners of the NDA to the governor for the formation of the new government.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is all set to be elected as leader of the NDA today ahead of the formation of a new government under his leadership in the state on November 20.

Kumar, who will take oath as Bihar CM for a record 10th time, will be first elected as leader of the JD(U) legislature party at 11 am today and after that, the leader of the NDA at 3.30 pm, before tendering his resignation to Governor Arif Mohammad Khan as head of the outgoing government, sources told PTI.
