The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) – despite facing a big setback in the Bihar Assembly polls – received the maximum vote share, surpassing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which emerged as the single-largest party after Friday’s counting.
Election Commission figures show that Tejashwi Yadav’s party captured a 23 per cent vote share, outperforming the BJP by 2.92 percentage points and Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) by 3.75 points.
However, the RJD, part of the opposition Mahagathbandhan in Bihar, saw a slight dip from its 23.11 per cent share in the previous polls, when it had fielded 144 candidates and bagged 75 seats – then emerging as the single-largest party.
This time, the party contested 141 seats but managed to win only 25 -- its second-worst Bihar performance after 2010, when it secured just 22.
Tejashwi Yadav, the Mahagathbandhan’s CM face, retained the family bastion of Raghopur after a tense, see-saw contest with NDA’s Satish Kumar.
The alliance fared poorly overall, with the Congress winning only six seats, its second-worst tally ever in the state, narrowly better than the four it managed in 2010.
