In a bid to accelerate the manufacturing of indigenous light combat aircraft, Rajnath Singh-led Defence Ministry has set up a high-level committee, an Economic Times report said on Monday. The panel will look at the measures to streamline the combat jet production process and augment the private sector’s participation. The measure will help in bolstering the strength of Indian Air Force squadrons.
The ET report says that the panel was formed by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh earlier this month. The panel is being chaired by defence secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. Other members of the panel include officials from the Indian Air Force and manufacturer Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.
According to the ET report, the panel will have to submit its report in next 30 days. It will be looking at the issues that have slowed down the manufacturing, key constraints and closer scrutiny of the manufacturing capacity. The panel will also work on a roadmap that can accelerate the production and find ways for increased participation by the private sector.
Currently, Hindustan Aeronautics is making the LCA Mk1A jets at two units located in Maharashtra’s Nashik and Karnataka’s capital city Bengaluru. HAL is already facing delays in its order of 83 combat jets of Rs 48,000. The delay is largely attributed jet engine supply woes. These engines are manufactured by GE. This delay, which is impacting the strength of India’s sky power was also highlighted by Air Chief Marshal AP Singh.
