Bihar’s Bettiah assembly seat, which comes under the Paschim Champaran parliamentary constituency, is shaping up to be a closely watched battle. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded sitting MLA and former deputy chief minister Renu Devi as the NDA candidate, while Washi Ahmad is contesting on behalf of the Mahagathbandhan. Although Jan Suraaj has fielded Anil Kumar Singh, the principal contest remains between Devi and Ahmad.
A non-reserved constituency, Bettiah holds significance as an agricultural and commercial centre, particularly for its brass, metalware, and leather industries. Situated in flood-prone North Bihar, the area also struggles with widespread unemployment. Voters’ primary concerns focus on poor road infrastructure, traffic bottlenecks, and insufficient drainage systems.

Renu Devi, the NDA nominee, has long been an influential figure in the constituency, having won the seat multiple times. She clinched consecutive wins in 2000, 2005, and 2010, lost the constituency to Congress’s Madan Mohan Tiwari in 2015, and regained it back from him in 2020.
She subsequently served as Bihar’s first woman deputy chief minister from November 2020 to August 9, 2022, managing key departments including animal husbandry, fisheries, panchayat, industries, and disaster management.
During the 2020 Assembly election, Renu Devi won the Bettiah seat with a margin of 18,079 votes over Congress’ Madan Mohan Tiwari. Devi secured 84,496 votes (52.83 percent), compared to Tiwari’s 66,417 votes (41.53 percent). The constituency reportedly recorded a turnout of 56.26 percent.

Bettiah will go to polls in the second phase of Bihar Assembly election on November 11.
Bettiah was also included in the Mahagathbandhan’s Voter Adhikar Yatra campaign held earlier this year. Despite the constituency’s sizeable Muslim population -- around 40 percent -- analysts note that the alliance may find it difficult to consolidate this vote bank due to the limited visibility of its candidate.
The counting of votes for Bihar Assembly polls will take place on November 14.
