Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has launched India’s first sensory room at Terminal 2, designed to support neurodivergent passengers and individuals with sensory sensitivities.
Located near the 080 International Lounge on Level 4, the space provides a calm and controlled environment to ease the stress of air travel.
Airports can be overwhelming due to bright lights, constant announcements, security screenings, and crowds—factors that pose challenges for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other sensory or mental health conditions. To address these concerns, Bengaluru airport’s sensory room offers a dedicated space for relaxation and self-regulation.
Hari Marar, MD and CEO of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), which operates KIA, said, “We are committed to building an inclusive and passenger-friendly airport. The addition of the sensory room aligns with our mission to create a seamless and stress-free experience for every traveller, ensuring that inclusivity is not just a feature but a core value for us.”
Backed by behavioural science and occupational therapy research, the sensory room is designed to provide a therapeutic and engaging environment. Studies suggest that even brief exposure to a sensory-friendly space can significantly reduce stress, making travel smoother for neurodivergent passengers, including both children and adults.
Developed in collaboration with Incluzza, a thought leader in disability inclusion, this initiative highlights the importance of sensory-friendly spaces in enhancing emotional regulation and overall travel experiences. Dipesh Sutariya, Chairman & Managing Director of EnAble India Group, said, “The sensory room is one of several inclusion initiatives BIAL has undertaken to ensure every passenger has a positive experience. We hope this is the beginning of more such initiatives across the country.”
The sensory room features ambient lighting elements like a bubble tube and galaxy projector, an art mural with soothing patterns, and interactive elements such as floor projections, a ball pool, and a sensory toy station. Specialized items like a crash pad, weighted blanket, and therapy mats help with emotional regulation, while auditory elements such as a white noise machine create a calming atmosphere. Additional features, including a balance board, lava lamp, and aroma diffuser, aid in relaxation and focus. The thoughtfully curated space ensures adaptability and inclusivity, providing a stress-free experience for passengers with sensory sensitivities, BIAL said.
