A senior Bank of Baroda official died by suicide on the bank’s premises in Baramati town, Pune district, on Thursday night. Police said a suicide note recovered from the spot pointed to 'work pressure' as the reason behind the extreme step.

The deceased has been identified as Shiv Shankar Mitra (52), a native of Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, who was working as the chief manager at the Baramati branch.

Following the incident, officers from Baramati City Police Station rushed to the spot and began a probe. Mitra’s body has been sent for postmortem. Police have filed an Accidental Death Report (ADR), and further investigation is underway, according to a report by The Indian Express.

Police Inspector Vilas Nale confirmed, as cited by The Indian Express, “Mitra had submitted his resignation on July 11, 2025, citing health issues and work stress. We have obtained a copy of his resignation letter from the bank.”

Though Mitra had asked to be relieved, the bank reportedly did not accept his resignation immediately due to the mandatory 90-day notice period. Police are now probing whether this added to his stress or if there was any undue pressure from other bank officials.

Importantly, his suicide note does not blame any individual. “He clearly stated he was taking this step due to work pressure and urged the bank not to burden its employees,” Nale said.

In an emotional part of the note, Mitra apologised to his wife and daughter and requested that his eyes be donated if possible.

This tragic incident has once again brought to the fore the mental health struggles and stress faced by banking professionals, especially those in senior roles.

"Barodians are deeply shocked by the sad demise of our colleague - Shri Shiv Shanker Mitra. We extend our Heartfelt Condolence to his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this trying time. We are providing full support and assistance to his family. Employee Wellness is a Predominant Priority for our Bank and various schemes have been initiated to make it a healthy workplace. We also run a comprehensive Employee Assistance Programme to take care of the health and wellbeing of the employees and their family members. We would like to affirm that our Barodian people and their Wellness remain our Topmost Priority," the bank said in a statement.
