Atmanirbhar in defence, message to Pakistan: Big takeaways from PM Modi's I-Day address

Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day address from the ramparts of the Red Fort not only reinforced the vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ but also sent a firm message to nations like Pakistan, the United States, and others: India will not yield to anyone, and its people remain its highest priority.

The past few months have seen India grappling with heightened friction with Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26, together with US-imposed tariffs that have drawn widespread attention.

In his speech, PM Modi clearly mentioned that the country would not distinguish between terrorism and those who foster it. He also mentioned that India would not compromise on the interests of its farmers – in what could be seen as a signal to the United States.

Here are some of the key takeaways from PM Modi’s speech

Stern message to Pakistan

In a sharp message to Pakistan, PM Modi asserted that India will stand firm against nuclear intimidation. Referring to the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty after the Pahalgam attack, he added, “Blood and water cannot flow together.”

“The people have come to realise that the Indus Waters Treaty is unjust and one-sided. Water from the Indus River system has been irrigating the lands of the enemy, while our farmers have suffered,” the Prime Minister said.

Against the backdrop of threats from Pakistan over the agreement, which was suspended after the Pahalgam terror attack, PM Modi asserted, “India has decided that it will not tolerate nuclear threats anymore; we won’t fall for any blackmail.”

Atmanirbharta push

PM Modi highlighted Atmanirbhar Bharat as the driving force behind the Armed Forces’ firm response to Pakistan’s provocations following Operation Sindoor. He announced that India will produce its own semiconductors by the end of the year, followed by plans to build a national space station.

“Had we not been self-dependent, Operation Sindoor would not have been possible. We would be worried about ‘who is going to help us’ or ‘who will not help us’… (Operation Sindoor) happened because of Make in India,” the PM said.

Highlighting the technology-driven nature of the 21st century, PM Modi called for intensified R&D in the development of homegrown fighter jets, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare solutions.

The other sectors highlighted by PM Modi include –clean and renewable energy, agricultural self-reliance and innovation and digital sovereignty and indigenous platforms.

National security mission

PM Modi’s address placed strong emphasis on national security, combining stern messages to outsiders with the announcement of several relevant programmes. He announced “Mission Sudarshan Chakra” – a programme that will focus on dismantling enemy defences and boosting India’s attack capabilities.

Although PM Modi gave no further information on the “Sudarshan Chakra” system, experts speculate it might follow the model of Israel’s Iron Dome, an advanced and proven missile defence shield, according to a PTI report.

Warning of an organised attempt to change India’s demographic profile through illegal entry, he said no nation can endure such threats and unveiled a high-powered demography mission to counter them.

Relief this Diwali

PM Modi declared that Diwali will bring “next-generation” GST reforms, including reduced taxes on essential items and significant support for MSMEs, street vendors, and consumers. He further announced the launch of a Reform Task Force to implement bold changes that will modernise governance, slash red tape, and put India firmly on the path to a $10 trillion economy by 2047.

In a major employment push, PM Modi announced the launch of PM Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana which is expected to create 3.5 crore jobs in next two years. He said that under this scheme the youth getting first job in the private sector will get Rs 15,000 and the companies (employing them) will get incentive amounts.

Global signalling

Signalling India’s firm stance, PM Modi said protecting farmers is non-negotiable. “The farmers of India are our biggest priority. Modi stands like a wall against any harmful policy related to them. India will not accept any agreement regarding its farmers, cattle rearers and fishermen,” he said.

The remarks were made amid strained trade relations, with the US recently hiking tariffs on Indian goods and penalising Russian oil imports, while talks have stalled over India’s unwillingness to allow American agricultural and dairy imports greater market access.

Steering clear of naming Trump, Modi denounced what he termed “economic selfishness” and pressed for an intensified “vocal for local” campaign to strengthen India’s self-reliance.

“I want traders who advertise their goods with the pride of Swadeshi,” he said. “Daam kam, dum zyada should be the motto of our products. Today, all 140 crore Indians must have only one mantra — a prosperous India.”

By reiterating ‘Make in India’ and ‘Vocal for Local,’ he made it clear that India stands firm and will step up its strength to tackle whatever lies ahead.
