At 9.6 lakh, Bengaluru Metro breaks ridership record amid RCB celebration chaos

Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officials said Wednesday's ridership was 9.6 lakh - the highest ever recorded.

The previous record was set on August 14, 2024, when 9.17 lakh commuters travelled by Metro.

Bengaluru Metro recorded its highest-ever daily ridership on June 4, with 9.6 lakh boarding amid massive crowds drawn by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) victory celebrations.

According to BMRCL data, Wednesday’s ridership included 4.7 lakh boarding on Purple Line, 2.8 lakh on Green Line and 2.03 lakh at Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Majestic interchange station. The previous ridership record of 9.17 lakh was set on August 14, 2024.

BMRCL had closed Cubbon Park and Dr BR Ambedkar Vidhana Soudha stations from 4:30pm on Wednesday due to the exceptionally high footfall for the RCB felicitation event held at Vidhana Soudha and Chinnaswamy Stadium. Token and QR ticket vending services at these two stations were suspended. By 8:30pm, all stations were reopened and normal operations resumed. As of 9pm, the total boarding figure stood at 8.7 lakh.

Bengaluru Metro currently operates a 73-km network, which includes: Purple Line: Challaghatta to Whitefield (42.17 km, 37 stations) and Green Line: Nagasandra to Silk Institute (30 km, 29 stations)

Following the fare hike implemented on February 9 - which raised ticket prices by up to 71 percent - Metro ridership dropped by about one lakh commuters per day. Prior to the hike, average weekday ridership was around 8.5 lakh.
