The flood situation in Assam worsened on Tuesday, with more than 5.35 lakh people across 22 districts reeling under the impact of relentless rain and rising river levels.
As rivers, including the Brahmaputra, Barak, and Kopili, continued to flow above the danger mark at several locations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, assuring the Centre’s full support in relief and rehabilitation efforts.
According to official data, over 1,254 villages in 65 revenue circles are submerged, with 165 relief camps sheltering more than 31,000 displaced residents. An additional 157 relief distribution centres are operational.
The death toll from the deluge and associated landslides stood at 11, with two people still missing, officials confirmed.
Among the worst-hit areas is the Sribhumi district, where nearly 1.94 lakh people have been affected. CM Sarma is scheduled to visit Cachar, another severely impacted district, to review relief measures on the ground.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati has issued an 'orange alert' for Dhubri, South Salmara Mankachar, Goalpara, and Kokrajhar, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and thunderstorms. A 'yellow alert' has been sounded for 11 other districts, indicating the potential for localized storms and lightning.
In addition to damaged embankments, roads, bridges, homes, and electric poles, over 12,610 hectares of cropland have been inundated, and 94 animals reportedly washed away in the last 24 hours. Two districts also remain under the grip of urban flooding, affecting more than 21,000 residents.
Road, rail, and ferry connectivity has taken a significant hit, disrupting daily life across the state.
Taking to microblogging site X, CM Sarma said, "A short while ago, Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji called me to enquire about the current flood situation in Assam." He added that the PM was briefed about the ongoing rescue and relief work and had expressed deep concern.
"The Hon'ble PM assured full support from the Central Government for our relief and rehabilitation efforts. Grateful for his guidance and unwavering support to the people of Assam," the Chief Minister stated.
