Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday escalated his attack on state Congress president and MP Gaurav Gogoi, alleging that he is a “Pakistani agent planted by foreign powers.”
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event, Sarma claimed, “Gaurav Gogoi is a Pakistani agent, he is purely that. He has been planted by a foreign power in our country.”
The BJP and Sarma have been repeatedly alleging Gogoi’s “Pakistani links” through his British wife, a charge that the Congress leader has strongly denied. Gogoi, in response, earlier dismissed the accusations as part of a “C-grade Bollywood film” that would flop, saying the people of Assam “understand everything.”
Sarma further stated that he would present “evidence” to back his claims after the ongoing investigation into singer Zubeen Garg’s death concludes. “I am not convening a press conference now to share the evidence, as some will say the Zubeen Garg issue is being diverted,” he said.
The remarks have drawn sharp reactions from the Congress, which has accused the Chief Minister of spreading misinformation and attempting to malign political opponents ahead of the upcoming elections.
