A district court in Haryana remanded Ashoka University professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad to judicial custody over his post on Operation Sindoor. The next hearing will be on May 27, reported ANI. While the Haryana police sought a seven-day remand, the Sonepat court sent the professor to judicial custody.
Mahmudabad, who heads the political science department at Ashoka University, was arrested on Sunday after his social media post was perceived as critical of the armed forces and disrespectful to the women officers, Colonel Sofia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, who were the face of the media briefings on Operation Sindoor.
Chief Justice of India on Monday agreed to an oral request for an urgent hearing by Ali Khan Mahmudabad, an associate professor of Political Science with the Ashoka University, who was arrested by the Haryana Police for his social media posts in connection with Operation Sindoor.
Appearing before the Chief Justice, senior advocate Kapil Sibal urged the court for an early hearing of the academician’s plea to quash the FIRs registered against him at Sonipat’s Rai Police Station. “He has been arrested for a patriotic statement. Please list it for tomorrow or the day after,” Mr. Sibal asked the Chief Justice, who agreed to the request.
