The ATOR N1200 can float and travel seamlessly over various terrains, be it water, snow, ice, marshes, dunes and rocky areas, making it suitable for high-altitude and harsh regions like Sikkim.
Its massive low-pressure tires act as flotation devices and feature prominent ribs to paddle across water bodies
The ATOR N1200 is fully amphibious and can seamlessly transition from land to water, as seen in the video.
It has giant low-pressure tyres that can double up as flotation devices and propellers, allowing the vehicle to cross different terrains and even broken ice up to one metre high. This unique capability ensures troops and supplies can move across otherwise impassable terrain.
The vehicle is constructed with a Docol high-strength steel frame and is built for extreme resilience.
A zinc coating ensures a service life of up to 30 years, while body panels are treated with corrosion-resistant polyurethane and can be fitted with Kevlar or composite armour for added protection.
High load capacityThough it has compact dimensions — 3.98 m in length, 2.57 m in width, and 2.846 m in height — the ATOR N1200 boasts of an impressive load capacity. It can carry 1,200 kg of payload along with seating for nine personnel (eight passengers plus a driver). Additionally, it can tow up to 2,350 kg, making it a versatile platform for logistics and troop movement.
It is also powered by a 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder diesel engine producing 55 bhp and 190 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. On land, it reaches speeds of about 40 km/h, while in water it moves at around 6 km/h. With a fuel capacity of 232 litres (including auxiliary canisters), it offers an operational range of nearly 61 hours, ensuring endurance in prolonged missions.
Extreme weather operationsThe ATOR N1200 is built to operate in harsh climates ranging from –40 °C to +45 °C. It remains functional even in fog, storms, heavy rains and snowstorms, making it an ideal vehicle for the Indian Army’s deployments in high-altitude and extreme-weather regions.
It was manufactured in India by JSW Gecko Motors (a subsidiary of JSW Group). Initially, 96 units were ordered by the ministry of defence under a Rs 250 crore contract. The ATOR N1200 made its public debut at the 2024 Republic Day Parade and has since been deployed in challenging zones like Sikkim and now Punjab.
