Just days after the Nikki Bhati dowry case from Greater Noida shook the entire nation, another shocker has now surfaced from Uttar Pradesh's Amroha, where a policeman set his wife on fire after his dowry demands were not met.
The man, Devendra, who is a head constable in UP Police and was recently transferred to Bareilly, had returned home on a one-week leave when the incident happened. According to reports, police said that he and his relatives attempted to burn the woman, Parul, and left her in a critical condition.
Parul and Devendra have been married for 13 years and have twins together — a boy and a girl. Following the horrific incident, a case was registered against six accused — Devendra, his mother-in-law, brother-in-law and three other male relatives named Sonu, Gajesh, Jitendra and Santosh. India Today has reported that the police are actively searching for those named in the case.
Anita, Parul's mother, has told the media that she learned about the incident from neighbours on Tuesday. "When I reached the spot, my daughter was writhing in pain, badly burnt," she said, adding, "She was taken to the nearest hospital but had to be referred to Delhi due to her condition. She remains in critical condition."
Just last week, Nikki Bhati from Greater Noida lost her life after her husband, Vipin Bhati, along with other members of the family, burnt her alive after demanding Rs 36 lakh as dowry. Horrific videos of Nikki, while set on fire, walking down the staircase surfaced on social media.
Nikki was set ablaze in front of her minor son, who later confirmed that something was poured on his mother, after which a lighter was used to set her on fire.
