The Andheri East Assembly constituency in Mumbai is set for a high-stakes 'Sena vs Sena' battle as sitting MLA Rutuja Latke faces off against Murji Patel.
In Maharashtra, the political scene is sharply divided between the Mahayuti alliance—comprising the BJP, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar's NCP—and the MVA, which includes Congress, Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), and Sharad Pawar's NCP-SP.
Andheri East, located in the Mumbai Suburban district, is part of the Mumbai North West Lok Sabha constituency. The constituency, under Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) limits, is well-connected by the Mumbai Metro.
In the 2022 by-election, Rutuja Latke from the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena won the seat by a significant margin of 66,530 votes. Earlier, in the 2019 elections, her late husband, Ramesh Latke, also of the Shiv Sena, secured the seat with a margin of 62,773 votes.
Murji Patel, a former corporator who recently switched from the BJP to the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, had contested unsuccessfully as an Independent candidate against Ramesh Latke in 2019.
The 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections will see polling across all 288 seats, including Andheri East, in a single phase on November 20. The votes will be counted on November 23.
