During his speech on the Waqf amendment bill in Lok Sabha, Home Minister Amit Shah gave a hint of the BJP’s plan for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh election.
SP chief Akhilesh Yadav had questioned Shah about Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s future in Uttar Pradesh. In response, Shah said, “Woh bhi repeat honge (he will also be repeated).”
This exchange followed the SP chief’s criticism of Shah's statement about BJP's future dominance in the state. Shah had claimed the BJP would stay in office for another three terms in UP.
The Union Minister’s comment came amid speculations in the political circle over the alleged feud between Yogi Adityanath and Amit Shah. The Uttar Pradesh assembly elections will be held in 2027 where the BJP will look to retain power for the third straight term.
In a recent interview with PTI, the CM said politics is not a full-time job for him and he remains Yogi at heart. He also dismissed speculation about him becoming the prime minister in the future.
Adityanath said his primary role is serving the people of Uttar Pradesh, as entrusted by his party. "I am the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, and the party has placed me here to serve the people of the state," he said.
Akhilesh had also said in the Lok Sabha during his address that a big party like the BJP was unable to elect its national president.
"The BJP claims to be the largest party in India but it still has not decided on its leader," he said.
Shah rose to say that since Yadav had spoken with a smile, he would reply in the same spirit.
"In some parties, only five members of a family have to choose the president so it is easy and quick, but we have to elect (a president) following a process that involves crores of members, so it takes time,” said Shah.
He said it would not take much time in the SP. "Let me state that you will remain president for 25 more years," Shah said amid laughter from the members.
The Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the early hours of Thursday, April 3, after an 12-hour-long debate, with 288 members voting for it and 232 voting against.
